Professor Lidenbrock:-
He was a famous geologist of the 19th century. Other geologists came from all over the world to learn from him. He knew more about the earth than any other Scientist.
Axel:-
He was the narrator of the story. He was a young man and the professor’s nephew. After the death of his parents, he came to live with his uncle. He often helped the professor in his work. He was proud to be his uncle’s assistant.
Martha:-
She was the professor’s cook. She was a kind woman.
Hans:-
He was a guide from Iceland. He was a big man who moved slowly. He was calm and sensible and didn’t say much. He was helpful to the Professor and Axel during their journey to the centre of the earth.
Dr. Fridrikson:-:-
He was a Scientist from Iceland. He told the Professor about Sneffels, an extinct volcano which hadn’t erupted for the last six hundred years. He also choose Hans to be their guide.
Arne Saknussemm:-
He was a famous Scientist in the 16th century. He wrote the secret message on the parchment which caused the Professor to make his journey. He was the first man who reached the centre of the earth.
Snorri Sturlasson:-
He was a Scientist in the 12th century. Professor Lidenbrock had a translation of his book.

Summary
Professor Lidenbrock was a famous geologist of the 19th century. He gave lectures in the University of Hamburg in Germany. He knew more about the Earth than any other Scientist. Axel was his nephew. He lived with his uncle after the death of his parents. Axel was proud to be his uncle’s assistant. The professor went home early. He was carrying a book in his hand and was very excited.
The book was the translation of a famous Icelandic book, which was written by a scientist of the 12th century, called “Snorri Sturlasson.”
A piece of parchment fell out of the book. There was a message written on it. At first the Professor thought it was written in Runs. Then he guessed it was written in Latin.
He found that the handwriting on the parchment wasn’t the same as the handwriting of the book. So, he was sure that the parchment wasn’t written by the writer of the book, but wrote later by its owner.
The professor could read the name of the parchment’s writer. “Arne Saknussemm.” He was a famous Icelandic Scientist of the 16th century. The Professor discovered that it was written in a secret code. He couldn’t explain why Arne hide what he had discovered and why he wanted to keep it a secret.
The Professor was very angry because he was unable to break the secret code of the message and went out of the house without eating. Martha, the cook was very worried about him.
