    Chapter 5
    The three men followed the eastern path. Axel saw plants and animals preserved in the rock. This meant they might have taken the wrong path. After walking for five days , at last they came to a blank wall with no way past it, so they went to the cross roads to take the western passage.
    When they reached the cross roads, Axel was very thirsty and tried. He fell down and his uncle gave him the last water. Axel tried to persuade his uncle to stop the journey and his uncle promised to do so if they didn’t find water the next day.
    They walked all day. Then they heard the noise of running water on the other side of the rock. Hans made a large hole in the rock with his pickaxe and jet of boiling water burst out at him and he cried out in pain. They left the hole in the wall. So, the water ran outside them to show them the quickest way down.
    Axel felt pain in his ears because of air pressure, the Professor advised him to breathe quickly. Axel went in front of them holding the torch. When he turned, he found himself alone. He lost his way. He fell down and dropped his torch. At last, he fell down on the floor and fainted.

    1. How did the characters know that they had taken the wrong path?
    As the path was going up not down, and they noticed animals and plants preserved in the rocks.

    2. Why did the explorers return to the crossroads?
    They returned to the crossroads because they came to the flat wall with no way forward.

    3. What was the professor's decision about the problem of water?
    He decided to have one more day to find water.

    4. What happened to Axel when they reached the crossroads?
    When they reached the crossroads Axel was thirsty and tired that he fell to the ground.

    5. Why did Axel ask his uncle to give up the journey?
    Axel asked his uncle to give up the journey because they ran out of water and they would die.

    6. Where did they hear the running water?
    They heard the running water in on the other side of the wall of the rock.

    7. What did Hans do to get the water?
    He made a hole in the wall of rocks and a jet of boiling water burst out.

    8. Why did Hans cry out in pain when the water hit him?
    Hans cried out in pain when the water hit him because the water was boiling.

    9. Why did they leave the hole in the wall as it was?
    They left the hole in the wall as it was to show them the quickest way down.

    10. What did Lidenbrock find out when he calculated their position?
    Lidenbrock found out when he calculated their position that they were under the Atlantic Ocean.

    11. Why did Axel fell pain in his ears? What was the Professor's advice to him?
    Axel felt pain in his ears because of the increased of air pressure, and the Professor advised him to breathe quickly.

    12. What happened to Axel at the end of chapter 5?
    He fell on the floor and fainted.

    13. Why were the characters more and more tired?
    They were more and more tired because the path was going up not down.

    14. Where did they camp?
    They camped at the edge of the crater.

    15. Who was Snorri Sturlasson?
    Snorri Sturlasson was a famous Scientist of the 12th century.

    16. How did Axel get lost?
    He walked in front of Hans and his uncle and somewhere he took a wrong turning.

    17. What happened to Axel after he separated from Hans and his uncle?
    The torch broke so he ran against the rocks in the darkness. He cut himself and fainted.
    Complete the following sentences:-
    1. Axel realized he was tired because the path was going up, not down.
    2. The shell of an insect preserved in the rock meant that the characters might have taken the wrong path.
    3. Axel wanted to give up the journey because they ran out of water and they would die.
    4. The characters decided to go to the cross roads to take the western passage.
    5. Professor Lindenbrock promised to give up the journey if he didn't find water in the western passage.
    6. Before the Professor could pick up the axe, there was a hissing sound ,and a strong jet of water burst out of the wall rock.
    7. The water that burst out of the wall of the rock was so strong that it knocked Hans down.
    8. To know the cause of Hans’s cry Axel put his hand into the water to see the reason of his crying.
    9. By August 7th they were 125 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.
    10. Axel felt he had reached a dead end when he walked straight into a wall of rocks and fell down.
