Rainforest Facts 1
Rainforests are very important. They are called rainforests because they have a lot of rain and high humidity. This means they are very good for trees and flowers. And, although they cover only six percent of the Earth, they are home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species. The major areas of tropical rainforests are in South East Asia, West Africa and South and Central America New vocabulary
Humidity (n): The amount of water in the air
Species (n): Different groups of plants or animals e.g. dogs, lions, roses.
Tropical (n): From the tropics, the hot middle area of the Earth.
Rainforest Facts 2
The rainforest is full of life. Everywhere you look, from the tops of the trees to the ground; there are animals, birds, plants and insects.
☼ The highest part of the rainforest is the emergent layer, at the top of the tallest trees – about 50 metres above ground. Flying insects, birds and orchids are found at this level.
☼ The next layer is the where you can find more orchids, as well as apes, monkeys and sloths. This level is called the canopy and is the tops of smaller trees, around 25 metres above ground.
☼ Moving below the canopy, you reach the understory. Only about 2% of the sunshine reaches the small trees and bushes here. The air is very humid and is the perfect place for bright flowers and fruits such as bananas and coffee to grow.
☼ Finally, on the ground, the forest floor is very dark. Ferns and fungus grow there, and large animals such as jaguars roam around. In the dead leaves there are insects and worms.
